My Ripple Fold Hack

The fabric:

These ready made curtains are from Amazon.

I ordered 2 packs of 2 curtains for my one window. My window is quite large and I didn’t want the curtains to look skimpy. My colour is ‘linen’ but the curtain comes in many colours. I have 8’ ceilings, I ordered 96” length. This curtain comes in 17 different lengths. One width 50”.

I sewed two panels together for one side then two panels for the other side.

I was lucky with the length. I didn’t have to hem them. I like the trouser hem. I also made them for my bedroom and office and I had to hem them.

I removed all the tabs attached to give the heading a smooth look and it made it easier to sew through the layers.

Tip: Be sure the ripple fold tape has an even count. The first flap should fold to the back and the last flap should fold to the back. If it ends in an odd number remove more fabric until you achieve an even count.

The Track:

This track comes in a kit consisting of the track that comes in sections. (for shipping purposes) The ripple fold tape, the carriers, comes with joiners or splices, these are used to join the track section together. The kit also comes with end caps, screws and plugs. This track kit comes in 24 different sizes.

We had to hack saw some of the track section to fit the widths of the window. We did wish the track came in one long piece as it would have made the opening and closing of the curtain smoother. The joins make the operation stick a little. However, this is a perfect project for a curtain that won’t have a lot of use.

If you are looking for a ripple for rod or track that is one full rod (no cuts) contact me below.

Tip: Use the factory cut ends together and the hack sawed cuts at the ends. The caps will cover any imperfections.

Designer tip: Extend your track at least 6” beyond the window frame. This gives the curtains a place to stack and won’t block the window when your curtains are opened.

We mounted our ceiling track 4.5” away from the wall. In this case we had a blind with a headrail that stuck out about an inch. We didn’t want the curtain to rest or rub on the headrail of the blind. Give yourself space as this style of ripple fold waves to the back and front.

It took us about 3 hours from start to finish for one window to compete.

This project is for beginner to intermediate. It was easy.
